Madman entertainment have acquired the rights to the "Tales of Earthsea" movie, and are planning on releasing this next year.

It is an animated version of (mostly) the third book in the series - The Farthest Shore.

Hopefully it will be a lot better than Sci-Fi channels attempt at an Earthsea movie, although IMO that should not be too hard.

Why are all the films based on young adult fantasy books?
Earthsea is good, but The Dispossessed by Le Guin would make a film of greater cultural value. Readers of our genre know it is full of stories to challenge as well as entertain. Other people get the impression it is all about fairy stories and childish. I would like to see Tepper's Mavin Manyshaped in a film, or one of L E Modesitt's stoic and ethical heroes. Adult content can be intellectual, not just sex and gore.

I keep thinking Bujold's Vorkosigan saga would make a nice film franchise, not holding my breath though, can't quite imagine Miles translating to the big screen.

This is dragging up an old topic, but the release date for this has been announced for Australia. It's being released as a 2 DVD set on September 12, 2007.
