Review Guidlines
Return to our review menu.
We welcome reviews submitted by readers. If you have an opinion on a book you have read, share it with us all.
If you enjoy writing reviews, talk to us. We often have books we will give away if you will give us a review.
These books are likely to be new releases by known authors.
Include with your review
- Title of book
- Name of author(s)
- Your name eg: John Smith
- How you want the review credited (eg: John S.), or if you wish your name withheld.
Considerations
-
Fully read the book before you complete the review.
However, try starting to write the review before you finish reading.
This can help with writer motivation.
-
Is it is a stand alone novel, or set within the same universe as other books, or part of a series?
State this and identify where in the sequence it should be read.
Those who read your review may have never heard of the author.
-
Consider your feelings whilst reading and after completing the book.
-
What pace is the plot - slow, fast?
-
Don't give away plot spoilers.
Write about the book, rather than explaining the story.
A review is not a comprehension test, more a judgement, recommendation, critique and comment.
-
Could you follow the story easily? Did it "make sense"? Were there any loose ends, and if so, did the mystery enhance the story?
-
You don't have to find fault. Reviews can be gushy or scathing, brief or lengthy. Really bad books don't deserve reviewing at all.
-
Would you read more books by the author, or in the series?
-
Identify the genre as well as you can. Consider explaining the category as some reading your review may be new to the field.
eg: mystery, military, action, space opera, romance, high fantasy, crime, thriller, horror, gothic, post apocalyptic, alternate history, etc.
Is this suitable for young readers? Give any required warnings about nasty scenes, adult themes, offensive content, etc.
-
Compare the style - what other books or authors is it similar to, and how. Eg: If you liked X, you will enjoy this.
